"Do you know when you'll be speaking to the band?" a text pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can become their fourth member."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise desires to be the Haims' fourth member. And we're far from alone. A host of famous admirers have openly coveted the role.

The evidence suggests an irresistible appeal is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana launched their career playing gigs at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as repeated Grammy nominees.

In the tradition of the greatest ensembles, they're a close gang. Their videos often show them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such pure joy you find yourself thinking, "I want to be involved in that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls came up to us and said, 'After your show, I bought a drum kit'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "It is the ultimate honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire others to make music."

"Therefore anyone is invited to be the next part of the family."

Award Recognition

The trio are speaking from a break, where they're resting up after an major tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're right now celebrating the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the very first all-woman band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," notes Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this correctly or am I imagining things'?"

The significance of the honor is deeply felt by the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the female artists that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Humour

The album was born from a time of transition. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The lyrics track departures and farewells. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in the moment who they are becoming.

"I adore way of putting it, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to actively work on shutting out the criticism and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That developed confidence called for a fresh approach – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who co-produced the album, that was founded on the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," quips Alana. "Our motto is, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Laughter

The trio's openness fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their personal tales.

Someone left Este over a medical consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's so amazing."

A Confident Path

It's not difficult sense a evolution in the band. Today, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with successful albums and an international fan base.

However the band will always be their top priority.

"We have been playing music since I was little," says Alana. "It feels as if no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still kicking."
